Voll and Barbara M. Wedderburn and Dr Elizabeth C. To facilitate these goals, the access to the different disease entities reflects the pathways of clinical work by evaluating the rheumatological symptoms of an unknown patient, followed by performing the adequate laboratory and technical examinations, and leading subsequently to an appropriate differential diagnosis.
The latter is one of the key strenghths of this book, as it not only assists the physician to assign the different variants of muskuloskeletal pain and cutaneous symptoms to the most likely underlying rheumatic disease but provides also practical hints for examination and manual techniques.
In the second part, the authors provide an indepth insight into the individual details of the different diseases outlining criteria, epidemiology, clincial features and variants as well as the current national and international recommendations and guidelines for systemic and organ-dependent treatment.
Are there shortcomings? Yes, but they do not decrease the value of this handbook: It does not really become clear, who are the addressees of the figures. For an experienced rheumatologist, they do not provide an advance over his or her knowledge and for fellows in training, the selection is nice but too limited—not only with regard to the presented diseases but especially with regard to the illustrations of intra-articular injections.
