Thank you! There was a problem adding your email address. Clancy dishes out page after page of highly detailed atomic bomb assembly directions and nuclear submarine specifications, enough technodazzle to satisfy the most seriously committed technofreak, but it is plain old-fashioned plotting in the best, hair-raising, we're-all-going-to-die-in-five-seconds-if-somebody-doesn't-do-something tradition that keeps things cracking in the very eventful life of Jack Ryan, hijacker of submarines, friend of princes, wizard of Wall Street, true spirit of the CIA, and devoted father. This time Ryan's nemeses are Arab terrorists who stumble on a lost Israeli atom bomb and get big ideas; the cowardly but attractive National Security Director who shares the President's pillow and hates our Jack; and the bottle. It is the last of these plagues that most worries Ryan's pretty ophthalmologist wife and friends.

Obviously a work of fiction--Jack Ryan is in the midst of negotiating a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict. As this region is no longer the hub of terrorist activity, what has become of the terrorists? Several Palestinians, radical East Germans--who no longer have a country, and even seemingly bored Americans seek to rekindle U. How do they go about doing this?

The Sum Of All Fears

Meanwhile, in Germany, American and Russian soldiers are tricked into firing on one another. The suspicion evolves from there and tensions increase to a post-Cold War high. Is war inevitable? While the political bickering in the White House does get tiresome, it does play a critical role in showing why there was such mistrust between the several characters in the end and a breakdown of communication--when the bomb does eventually detonate.

The Sum Of All Fears by Clancy, Tom

This book does not provide any memorable Jack Ryan scenes. It is during these last pages where all the plots seemingly come together--but unfortunately, the story is now drawn out to one long action-scene.

At the very least, the action is exciting and easy to follow. The device however did not detonate fully or properly, based on an assembly error, creating therefore only a partial atomic explosion, or fizzle. Nevertheless, the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of State were both killed, as well as the thousands of fans in attendance and hundreds more residents of Colorado due to the primary and secondary effects of the initial detonation.

Through a series of coincidences, misunderstandings and the attack on American forces in Berlin, the plan was almost a success and for a brief moment the U. Elizabeth Elliott had lost control and were ready to begin a nuclear war. The crisis was averted when Jack Ryan , after receiving evidence that the bomb originates from the U.

A curious twist was that the terrorists devised a backup plan in the event of failure. When this happened and they were captured, they put it to work by implicating the Iranian Ayatollah Mahmoud Hajj Daryaei as responsible for the attack.

Sum of All Fears (Om)

The American President, Bob Fowler , was enraged, and because the Ayatollah was known to reside in the holy city of Qom, ordered the city destroyed through a nuclear attack. After Ryan averts the attack by enforcing the two-man rule, the terrorists accidentally revealed the ruse and that they devised it in order to discredit and shame the U.

This would destroy the delicate peace process, allowing the campaign against Israel to continue. The plan can be seen as employing the commonly used terrorist tactic called agent provocateur, the inciting agent. The terrorists then were executed by beheading in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Ryan was presented an ancient sword held by the Saudi royal family. The sword was meant to honor all who died, but it also served to remind Ryan of all who didn't die because of his actions.

It was later revealed in the sequels that the gift inspired Jack Ryan 's Secret Service codename " Swordsman ". Accused in a scandal and died in his office leaving Elizabeth Elliot in his place as National Security Adviser.
